Leg Pain When Walking at an Incline?

This could be caused by a dangerous condition known as Peripheral Arterial Disease (P.A.D.). This disease commonly affects the arteries in the legs. People with P.A.D. develop plaque in the lining of the arteries. This plaque can be very hard, like a rock, or soft like french fries. The plaque that develops will interfere with blood flow, causing the leg to loose blood (oxygen). Without proper blood flow, a person can loose their toes, feet, and legs all together. It doesn’t happen overnight, which is great because you can prevent the development of P.A.D. by changing your lifestyle!!

Peripheral Arterial Disease Commonly Affects These Type of People:

  • Age 50 or over
  • Current or former smoker: Smoking is more closely related to developing PAD than any other risk factor. Smoking increases the risk of developing PAD three to five times
  • Diabetes: One in every three people over the age of 50 with diabetes is likely to have PAD
  • High blood cholesterol: Excess cholesterol and fat in your blood contribute to the formation of plaque in the arteries, reducing or blocking blood flow to your heart, brain, or limbs
  • High blood pressure
  • Personal history of vascular disease, heart attack, or stroke: If you have heart disease, you have a one-in-three chance of also having PAD
  • Renal insufficiency
